about

Founder members, Mike Hayes (Guitar) and Rob Sykes (Bass) met when Mike put an ad in the NME looking for musicians with shoegaze influences. Rob, an MBV devotee, saw the ad and still remembers the first rehearsal that he and Mike had in 2001:

"I’d been struggling doing bedroom music in a failing partnership. Playing with Mike just blew me away and we had hundreds of ideas. It was like we’d been working together for years."

But finding the right band members to join them was to take a long time. After scores of failed auditions for singers and drummers they found Davide, a drummer from Naples whose influences matched theirs and who was to have a dramatic influence on the band in terms of turning musical ideas into structured songs. The band called themselves Sleepless for the first time in 2002.

Still, Sleepless were without a vocalist but such was their devotion to the music, the three members continued to audition singers and to write new songs. Writing was always done by the band in the rehearsal studio. Mike might start with a typically beautiful guitar melody, Rob and Davide would know instinctively what to do and the ideas flowed. Even after long breaks — Davide returned to his beloved Naples during the summers — the band would come back as strong as ever.

It was after discovering the web forum shoegaze.co.uk that things start to move forward in terms of finding that illusive singer. After posting a message on the forum, Rob was contacted by Jon Thompson, a singer and guitarist with an incredible passion for the shoegaze genre, living in Houston. The 4000 mile distance mattered not — Jon was about to move to London permanently and he became Sleepless’ singer in June 2004.

The band wasted no time in moving from the rehearsal studio to the recording studio. In October 2004, they made their first studio demos at Raezor studios, Wandsworth under the expert production of Gordon Mills, producer of the last (and next) Bluetones album.
