She Turned Home Alone

about

These lyrics were loosely inspired by the poem “Goblin Market”, written in 1862 by Christina Georgina Rossetti, the sister of Dante Gabriele Rossetti, leader of the so-called Pre Raphaelite painters. The protagonist of the poem is a little girl, Laura, who is walking with her sister Lizzie to a windmill by a stream when she meets goblins selling strange fragrant fruits; she eats many of those but then she feels sick, managing to recover from the intoxication only after several days of pain. It’s probably an autobiographical story of temptation and redemption, possibly an allegorical description of Christina’s own addiction to laudanum, that is opium soaked in wine and taken orally, a common drug in the Victorian Age. Some biographers report that Christina, who dedicated her adult life to the social assistance of prostitutes and campaigned against maltreatment to animals, was sexually abused by her father when she was a teenager; starting from this element, this track’s lyrics tell the story of a country girl meeting a man who gives her the fruits he’s supposed to sell just to rape her and eventually leave her alone on the road
